Many Holy Land groups celebrate communion on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. The engine cuts off, the boat drifts gently, and a silence settles over the water. Your pastor breaks the bread. The cup is passed. And for a few minutes, two thousand years vanish.

This is the lake where Jesus multiplied loaves and fish to feed five thousand. Where he walked on the water toward his terrified disciples. Where he cooked breakfast on the shore after the resurrection and asked Peter three times, "Do you love me?"

If your group does this, let it be unhurried. Sing a hymn. Read John 21. Let the gentle rocking of the boat remind you that Jesus meets us in the ordinariness of bread, wine, water, and a fishing boat — not just in cathedrals. The Galilee communion is, for many travelers, the spiritual climax of the entire pilgrimage.
