The Jordan River is where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist — the event that marked the beginning of his public ministry. For Christian pilgrims, entering the waters of the Jordan is one of the most meaningful experiences of a Holy Land trip. This guide covers the three main baptism sites available to pilgrims, what to expect at each, and how to plan a baptism or renewal ceremony for your group.

    Key points:

    • Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:13–17), an event all four Gospels record.
    • Three sites are available to pilgrims: Yardenit (at the Sea of Galilee), Qasr el-Yahud (near Jericho, the traditional site), and Bethany Beyond the Jordan (on the Jordanian side).
    • Yardenit is the most accessible and popular for group baptisms; Qasr el-Yahud is the traditional site of Jesus' baptism.
    • Most groups arrange a baptism or renewal-of-faith ceremony. Robes, towels, and changing facilities are available at all sites.

What does the Bible say about Jesus' baptism?

All four Gospels record Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Matthew 3:13–17 gives the fullest account: Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. John protested, but Jesus insisted, "Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." As Jesus came up from the water, "the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.'"

This event — the baptism of Jesus — is one of the few events recorded in all four Gospels and is considered a theophany, a moment where all three persons of the Trinity are simultaneously present: the Father speaking, the Son being baptized, and the Spirit descending. It marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and is the model for Christian baptism.

    What is Yardenit?

Yardenit is the primary baptism site for Christian pilgrims in Israel, located at the southern end of the Sea of Galilee where the Jordan River exits the lake. The site is operated by Kibbutz Kinneret and is open daily. It features:

    • Baptismal pools — steps leading into the river with railings for support. The water is shallow (waist-deep) and the current is gentle.
    • Changing rooms and showers — clean, modern facilities for changing before and after baptism.
    • Baptismal robes — white robes are available for rent ($5–10). Most groups arrange this in advance.
    • Towels — available for rent or bring your own.
    • A wall of tiles — inscribed with the account of Jesus' baptism in Mark 1 in multiple languages.

Yardenit is the most practical site for group baptisms — it has the best facilities, is easily accessible, and is on the standard Galilee touring route. Allow 60–90 minutes if your group is doing baptisms; 30 minutes for a visit.

    What is Qasr el-Yahud?

Qasr el-Yahud is the traditional site of Jesus' baptism, located on the Jordan River near Jericho, about 10 km east of the city. The site was closed to tourists for decades due to landmines from the 1967 war, but was reopened in 2011 after demining and restoration by the Israeli authorities.

The site is more austere than Yardenit — the facilities are simpler, and the river is narrower here because it's further south and more water has been diverted. But it has a deeper historical and spiritual significance: this is the area where John the Baptist is believed to have ministered, and where Jesus was likely baptized. The Jordanian side of the river (Bethany Beyond the Jordan, Al-Maghtas) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Qasr el-Yahud has changing rooms, baptismal steps, and parking. It's less crowded than Yardenit and offers a more authentic, less commercialized experience. Allow 60–90 minutes if doing baptisms; 30 minutes for a visit.

What is Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas)?

Bethany Beyond the Jordan (called Al-Maghtas in Arabic) is the Jordanian side of the traditional baptism site, directly across the river from Qasr el-Yahud. It was identified in the 1990s as the biblical "Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing" (John 1:28) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site includes the remains of early Christian churches and baptismal pools from the 4th–6th centuries, built by early Christian pilgrims who came to be baptized where Jesus was baptized. It's accessible only from Jordan, so it's typically visited by groups that include a Jordan extension. Allow 2–3 hours including the drive from Amman.

How should your group plan a baptism ceremony?

Most Christian tour groups arrange a baptism or renewal-of-faith ceremony at one of the Jordan River sites. Here's what to plan:

    • Choose the site: Yardenit for convenience and facilities; Qasr el-Yahud for historical authenticity.
    • Arrange robes in advance: your tour operator can pre-book white baptismal robes for your group.
    • Prepare a liturgy: most groups have a pastor or leader who prepares a short baptism or renewal liturgy — reading Matthew 3, a prayer, and the baptism itself.
    • Bring dry clothes: pilgrims should bring a change of clothes and a towel. Changing rooms are available at all sites.
    • Don't shave for 24 hours: the river water can sting freshly shaved skin.
    • Water shoes: the riverbed is rocky — wear water shoes or old sneakers you don't mind getting wet.

Which site should your group choose?

For most groups, Yardenit is the practical choice — it's on the Galilee touring route, has the best facilities, and is designed for group baptisms. If your group is particularly interested in historical authenticity and is already visiting the Jericho/Dead Sea area, Qasr el-Yahud is the more meaningful choice — it's the traditional site of Jesus' baptism and offers a more austere, less commercialized experience. Some groups visit both: Yardenit for a group baptism, Qasr el-Yahud for a visit and reflection.

Entering the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized is, for many pilgrims, the most personal and emotional moment of their Holy Land trip. Whether it's a first baptism or a renewal of faith, the waters of the Jordan connect you to the moment when the heavens opened and the Father said, "This is my beloved Son."
