Nazareth today is a bustling Arab-Israeli city of 80,000 — the largest Arab city in Israel. At its center is the enormous Basilica of the Annunciation, built over the cave where tradition says the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. The lower level preserves the ancient grotto; the upper church features stunning mosaics of the Madonna donated by countries around the world.

Walk to the nearby Church of St. Joseph, built over what may have been Joseph's carpentry workshop. Then stroll through the old market (souk) for fresh spices, Arabic coffee, and knafeh — the beloved Palestinian cheese pastry soaked in syrup.

Nearby Cana (Kafr Kanna) is the traditional site of Jesus' first miracle — turning water into wine at a wedding feast. Many couples renew their wedding vows at the Franciscan Wedding Church here. It's a short drive from Nazareth and pairs perfectly with a day exploring the lower Galilee.
