Carved from pink sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago, Petra is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The mile-long walk through the narrow Siq canyon — with walls 300 feet high — builds anticipation until the Treasury suddenly appears, glowing rose-gold in the morning light.
Most tours only show the Treasury, but Petra is an entire city. Climb to the Monastery (800 steps) for a facade even larger than the Treasury with far fewer crowds. Walk the Street of Facades, explore the Royal Tombs, and have tea with the Bedouin at the High Place of Sacrifice for a panoramic view of the valley.
Wear broken-in hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and start early. The morning light on the Treasury is best before 9 AM. A two-night stay lets you see Petra by Day and optionally Petra by Night (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday). We recommend pairing Petra with a night in Wadi Rum for the full Jordanian desert experience.
