The Sea of Galilee — called Kinneret in Hebrew — is a freshwater lake about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide. It sits 700 feet below sea level, surrounded by green hills that turn golden in summer. This is where Jesus called his first disciples, calmed the storm, and walked on water.

Don't miss Capernaum (Jesus' home base with a well-preserved synagogue), the Mount of Beatitudes (a peaceful hilltop overlooking the lake), Tabgha (the traditional site of the loaves and fishes), and Magdala (Mary Magdalene's hometown, recently excavated). A morning boat ride across the lake is the highlight for most groups.

Stay in Tiberias for the widest range of hotels. The town itself has hot springs, a lively promenade, and easy access to all the lakeside sites. Plan two full days here minimum — rushing through the Galilee is one of the most common itinerary mistakes we see.
